KU Appoints Interior Architecture Program Director
LAWRENCE, Kan. (WIBW) – University of Kansas appointed new director of interior design program
The University of Kansas said the School of Architecture & Design has appointed Nisha Fernando as director of the interior design program.
“We are delighted that Nisha is joining our community,” said Joe Colistra, chair of the architecture department. “She has extensive teaching and administrative experience and has been instrumental in several accreditation processes in the past.
KU said Fernando was previously a full professor of interior design at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point where she taught for nearly two decades. He said for six years that she worked as associate dean and division head at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
According to KU, Fernando has also regularly published and presented his research at refereed conferences.
“My research focuses on the cultural aspects of design and spatial experiences, the sensory values of architecture and design, and the environment-behavioral interactions of spaces,” said Fernando.
Acting Dean Mahbub Rashid said the new program was already in high demand.
“It’s only in its second year that we are already getting five times as many applicants as we can get into this program,” said Rashid. “I am very optimistic that the demand for this program will continue to grow in the years to come. Located at the heart of our nationally recognized architecture and design programs, our interior design program has all the necessary ingredients to become a nationally recognized program as well. With her excellent academic and administrative backgrounds, I have no doubts that Nisha is the right person to lead this new program at a time when so much around us is changing so rapidly.
Fernando said that with the program being so new, she was looking to develop the program further.
“The interior design program at (the school) is at a very exciting point,” Fernando said. “It can be further developed to include the most recent and important interior design needs and trends that help individuals and communities thrive and feel good, while contributing to a sustainable and respectful world. the environment. Students have such opportunities for hands-on, virtual learning experiences within the program, which will make it one of the most accredited AI programs in the country. “
