Ike Sonder took his career to the next level, moving from his day job selling furniture to being an award-winning interior designer thanks to TAFE NSW.

He enrolled in the Interior Design Diploma at TAFE NSW and was recently named NSW Graduate of the Year for Interior Design in the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) Graduate of the Year Awards (GOTYA). Ike competed alongside 173 top TAFE NSW graduates, academic and private NSW training providers and won the top prize in his category.

He took the step towards a career in demand. According to the Australian government employment outlook, interior design employment has grown very sharply over the past 5 years and is expected to increase a further 16.3% by 2025.

“I’ve always been very interested in interior design, but having no accreditation under my belt, I wasn’t sure how to break into and land a job as a designer,” Ike said.

“I’m so glad I made the decision to take the plunge and study interior design. TAFE NSW has a big name in the industry and was practice-oriented which was important to me.

Ike now works for the residential interior design firm Lawless & Meyerson and also does his first commercial interior design project in his spare time.

Senior Lecturer in Interior Design at TAFE NSW Design Center Enmore Tanya Dobble said the degree develops practical design skills combined with theory to give students a good understanding of design best practices both in Australia and abroad.

“TAFE NSW Design Center Enmore is a purpose built design studio where students can immerse themselves in design,” said Tanya.

“Students have the opportunity to hone their practical design skills, develop their business skills, and become a creative force in an industry where designers are in high demand. “

Ike says TAFE NSW has been essential in getting him the job he wanted and encourages others to try TAFE.

“I would definitely take the step. TAFE NSW has really allowed me to study the way I want to; start part-time, move to full-time. It has fantastic teachers who are still working in the design industry and who are a great source of knowledge.
