GS to talk about vegan interior materials for cars at Smart Automotive Surfaces 2021
Material innovation in silicone rubber creates vegan leather for smart touch controls
Hsinchu, Taiwan – Sep 23, 2021 – General Silicones (GS), board member of FlexTech Taiwan, announces that he will share how innovations in silicone material properties enable mass production and integration of smart surfaces in the automotive industry. The presentation will be given by Dr Anupam Mukherjee, Technical Director at the R&D Center of General Silicones, at the Smart Automotive Surfaces 2021 conference on October 7.
An ecological vegan material for touch surfaces of cars
Dr Mukherjee will present Compo-SiL®, a silicone rubber-based material that acts like vegan leather for panels and upholstery while providing a haptic feel for touch surfaces and the ability to be integrated into electronics. GS solved the problem of low wettability of cured silicone rubber with its unique patented technology that overcomes the challenge that excluded silicone rubber as a material for wider use. Compo-SiL® is a green material that combines all the advantages offered by silicone in a vegan leather capable of integrating with traditional and flexible hybrid electronics.
A sustainable material to replace e-plastic
Compo-SiL® is a vegan leather environmentally friendly and low carbon footprint. Customers use it as an alternative to animal skin materials and polymer-based imitation leather materials. It has excellent mechanical strength, adjustable elasticity, acts as a flame retardant and its patented technology allows surface adhesion with standard industrial adhesives during mass production.
Digitally printable with editable surface properties
GS modifies silicone rubber during manufacturing to achieve embossing and coloring according to customers’ requirements. For locations that require a firm grip with non-slip properties, the friction coefficient of the material is changed to provide higher strength. Unique for silicone rubber sheets is the ability for customers to digitally print the modified surface of Compo-SiL® silicone sheets with custom prints and designs in mass production.
GS is already working successfully with automotive component manufacturers and touchscreen suppliers to integrate Compo-SiL® solutions based on automotive interiors and touch panels.
